Wake up & smell the coffee

March 2, 2011

I was sad to read in the local press yesterday that a local business in closing, a shop that at 132 years of age, is one of the oldest in the city. So it really is a shame that today it closed its doors for the final time.

The business in question is a coffee shop. Yes I know that our high streets are full of various well-known coffee companies, but this one was different. It wasnt just a place to go and enjoy a cup of coffee, or other refreshments in recent years. No, it was a shop that sold coffee: coffee beans, ground coffee, coffee makers and other coffee accessories. As a child I used to go along there with my father when he went to buy his coffee beans. I can still remember the smell even now, 30 plus years later. Mmmmmm.

So today is a sad sad day for the people of Sheffield. No longer will children stand gazing at those coffee displays, smelling that lovely coffee bean smell. I guess we’re all going to have to go somewhere else now to smell the coffee 😦
